Who is the best coach you ever had and why?
I am blessed to have had an amazing elementary and Junior High school gym teacher who was also my soccer and baseball coach. He was a United States Olympic athlete who was able to convey the hard work, discipline, and dedication he had as an athlete to the student-athletes he worked with. He had a genuine care for the children in the community and was ahead of his time focusing on a total person and not just the Xs and Os of a sport. His influence early in my life assisted me through some challenges when I got to high school that could have been devastating for me as a person and an athlete if not for him and his compassion. His positive influence spilled over into every part of my life as I navigated early adulthood, college life, and then into the military. He is a great example of who I want to be as a coach.
What should athletes and parents know about you?
I am more than just a coach. I'm a guide committed to unlocking the untapped potential in every athlete. With my unique blend of mental performance, cutting-edge science, and years of experience, I focus on developing not just a better player, but a better teammate and person. My approach empowers athletes to build trust, confidence, resilience to antifragility, and a growth mindset while helping parents support their child's journey in sports and life. Together we'll go beyond the game to achieve lasting success on and off the court, field, pitch, pool, mat, and board.
It will be my privilege to get to work with you!
Coaching Background
Summary of Coaching Background
My first coaching position was for a 6th-grade soccer team in 1978. I have since coached at levels from 2-year-olds to college, off and on, over the 50 years of my participation in the game and was a player-coach in the adult league of San Antonio, Texas for 4 years with the military.
I coached coed high school soccer (10 years) and coed youth soccer (6 years).
How can you help someone improve their game?
If you ask a player how much of their game is mental, they may say up to 90%, and yet it is the least, if at all, of the areas they will train. It isn't enough to tell a player to focus, there are techniques and strategies to learn and apply. When we look at the potential of an athlete, the area that can be most improved is the 60%-90% output. This means that sometimes they can play at 60% of what they are capable of and sometimes they can perform at 90% of what they are capable of having a great game. I use drills, skills, techniques, and strategies to reduce the gap between these two levels so performance is consistently closer to the 90% that they are capable of. You have to be beyond ordinary to be extraordinary. Knowledge without the application is useless. Let's get to work!
What does a typical training session look like?
The first question is: "What do you want?"
I can bombard you with so much data specific to your sport and mindset that you will be overwhelmed and what good is that if it doesn't answer this fundamental question first and you can't apply it yet?
Who is your accountability partner? How will they keep you accountable?
The second question is: "How much effort are you willing to give to achieve this goal?" Once we identify what you can control (effort, attitude, behaviors) then I can develop a training program that will meet the specifics of what you want but "you" have to do the work!
I have high standards. My expectations are within your reach if you are willing to do the work to the best of your ability.
